Vessels - 23 February to 18 April 2010Vessels is a world premiere installation that runs as part of the New Zealand International Arts Festival 2010. Screens every 40 minutes. View the daily screening times. Internationally renowned artist Daniel Brown’s first New Zealand exhibition follows his highly successful work at the City of Rome ‘Birthday of the Eternal City’ celebrations and the New York River to River Festival. Vessels, inspired by Dante’s early 14th century poem Divine Comedy, tells of a boat silently ferrying souls across the sea. Transparent vessels of suspended water create shimmering patterns of light ripples representing the threshold between light and darkness, land and sea, life and afterlife. Visitors inhabit a quiet threshold at the edge of the ripples, as if they have ventured into the world of souls. Original music by Mark K. Johnson establishes the sounds of a ghost vessel silently approaching the shore, and then eternally receding once again. The music contains the whispers of the tide; the sounds of the sea repeating in endless cycles; the haunting echoes of a ship’s bell in the distance, warning of obstacles. The Museum will also have extended opening hours of 10am to 8pm until 21 March to give you every chance of viewing this impressive installation. |
